Beth at RBW has dipped her toe in the proverbial Cyclo-cross water. Here she shares her experience of her first CX races with you...who knows you might be inspired?!
My first venture into the world of 'cross came with Round 3 of the Welsh Cyclo-cross League, held in Foxley Estate, Hereford. My initial feelings of trepidation were soon assuaged: Cyclo-crossers, I discovered are a bobble-hatted, friendly sort of bunch! There were also delicious bacon butties and home-made cakes on offer next to the signing on area, they know the way to my heart! Watching the children's races, I was impressed by the little uns' skills in the Under 8s, Under 10s and Under 12s categories. It really is a family friendly sport.
As I stood on the start line, I was reassured to find I wasn't the only one on a mountain bike (no you don't need a special cyclo-cross bike to start out with!) and the other ladies entered in the 'Novice Women' category all seemed very chatty and just about as new to it as me. A few laps later, my heart racing, the race was over. The Youth and Novice women's event is only 25 minutes long, plus a lap- so half the distance of the main event and an ideal way to give it a go. I was glad I did and now I'm raring for more. All that was left was to sit back and enjoy spectating the main race. Perhaps I'll be doing that one next year!
